Jim 'Ike' Bryner, Tape 2

This tape is comprised of four different sessions.

I don't have a date for this tape but, on session 4, Jim mentions Tinkey Queer's age of eighty-two. Tinkey Queer is probably the noted fiddle player from the Ligonier, Pennslyvania area, Harry "Tink" Queer, who was born July 7, 1895 and died January 1978. So the recording of Tinkey was probably made after July 1977. The way Jim talks about Tinkey on the tape indicates that he is still alive so the tape must have been made sometime between July of 1977 and January of 1978. Jim was probably in his early-seventies when these sessions were recorded.

Session 1

This session was probably recorded between July, 1977 and January, 1978, when Jim was in his early-seventies.
There are seven songs in this session.
Jim is playing with his daughter Norma Ruth Newcomber (piano) and grandaughters Joyce (fiddle) and Karen (fiddle). All the songs are slower inspirational/christian songs.
The recording quality of this session is pretty good.

Session 2

This session was probably recorded between July, 1977 and January, 1978, when Jim was in his early-seventies.
There are thirty songs in this session.
Jim is playing with Ray Hardy (guitar). First Jim plays a classical tune that he used to sometimes play. I don't know if this is a real classical composition or something made up by Jim or some other fiddler. I think he records one part on a tape then plays it back while he plays an accompaniment. After that tune, Jim says 'hey Johnny, I just wanted to play a classical number for you, now I'll give you some hillbilly'. Then, Jim and Ray play together recording about twenty-eight songs. Then, Ray goes home and Jim records two more songs by himself.
The recording quality of this session is pretty good.

Session 3

This session was probably recorded sometime in 1977, when Jim was in his early-seventies.
There are twelve songs in this session.
Jim has twelve songs recorded with Jimmie (fiddle, guitar?) and Loren (banjo) Currence at Jimmie's home in Mabie, West Virginia. First Jimmie and Loren play seven songs. Then Jim joins them for another five songs.
These songs were recorded from another tape (speaker to microphone) and some of the sound quality is rather poor. Also, it seems like the tape was sticking and you can hear the sound fade out, then somebody (Jim) hit the recorder buttons and it starts back up.

Track List (*see title notes)

play 42 Bill Cheating       ( 1.2M)

Session 4

This session was probably recorded between July, 1977 and January, 1978, when Jim was in his early-seventies.
There are eight songs in this session.
Jim recorded of Tinkey Queer (fiddle) and Russ Loveridge (banjo) at Tinkey's home near Ligonier, Pennsylvania. I think Tinkey is a relatively well know fiddler in Pennsylvania. He is also a performer listed in Samuel Bayard's book; "Dance to the Fiddle, March to the Fife - Instrumental Folk Tunes in Pennsylvania". I don't think Jim plays with them on any of these songs.
The recording quality of this session is fair.

Track List (*see title notes)
play 55 'No title for this song'       ( 927k)
play 56 'No title for this song'       ( 857k)
